My Humps ? The Explanation

Is there any body here, who has not heard about Alanis Morissette parody, on the song, my humps? What a peculiar parody. Is, my humps, just a random blubbering of words, or an impressive poetry?

Let us start, with a short reminder, and freshen up, about this drama. The black eyed peas, is a very successful hip hop group, in recent years. In 2005, they released the song, my humps, an extremely provocative song, which at first listening, seems like is dedicated to the lovely humps, of the beautiful, song performer, Fergie.

The song, on one hand, was very successful, and even won a Grammy, at 2007. On the other hand, it received, strong criticism, which addressed both the provocative, video clip, and the shallow lyrics, meaning the expression, my humps, which repeats 55 times, in the song.

In 2007, Alanis Morissette, released, an extremely peculiar parody, on the song. The parody became extremely successful in youtube. As a response Fergie sent, to Alanis, a cake shaped like an ass!

In order for us to begin to understand, what was going on, we must recall, The English literature, classes, we participated in, so long ago.  But first, the disputed text:

She’s got me spendin’.
(Oh) Spendin’ all your money on me, up on me, on me.

Poem analysis: the poem is based on one main metaphor. Fregie is imaged to a “kept” girl, and the male viewers, to, her sugar daddy, who finance her, buy her jewelry, and stuff. This is a very special sugar daddy, who is allowed only to watch.

The metaphor is not stated explicitly, it is hidden. However it stands in the center of the poem. The metaphor is certainly not correct, the black eyed peas, do not own their success, to Fergies humps, but to her talent, and the talent of the rest of the group members.

The metaphor is correct for one very important reason. It represents, and transfer, the way Fergie feels, and we believe her. The poem is about experience, emotional, experience, and much less a poem that, say.

Now all the lines of the poem, are explained

1)    money, wealth, jewelry

2)    sex

3)    men are allowed only to watch

4)    all other lines

The poem stands for symbolic meaning also. Successful women, succeed also, for their look, and flirt, and in the word of today, do it concisely.

Alanis Morissette parody: in 2007, Alanis released, a most peculiar parody, on the song. The parody,  became very successful, in youtube. While the black eyed peas performing, is rhythmic. Alanys performs the song, in a fashion, of melodic ballad.

Alanis clip is certainly a parody. However it is also other things. In order for us to be convinced about this, we just have to watch Alanis, performing the following section of the song:

She’s got me spendin’.
(Oh) Spendin’ all your money on me and spendin’ time on me
She’s got me spendin’.
(Oh) Spendin’ all your money on me, up on me, on me.

Alanis performance, of this section, is extremely melodic. Alanis emphasizes the true beauty, of the words, the feeling of wealth, glamour, money, and beauty, that arises from hearing these words. This is how, Fregie feels. In performing this section, Alanis solutes Fregie, for the text she wrote.

It seems, there lie here, a   self contradiction, but it is not so. Alanis purpose is not to mock Fergie, but completely different.

As I stated before, Fergie’s poem, is about experience, and not a say. However, Alanis, interpret it as a say: Successful women, succeed also, for their look, and flirt, and in the word of today, do it concisely.

Alanis, purpose in this special performance, is to suggest, an alternative, for women. Meaning Alanis way: women of our days can and should, succeed for their own merits.

Now it is all clear to us.

The parody way of performing, is intended to ridicule Fergie’s way
Performing in such a melodic format, is intended mainly to show the great beauty of the words. To show Fergie’s talent and to make clear that Fergie can succeed, without using her humps.
The extremely unusual performance, intended, to make the viewers stop, and think. Think, about the topic, in general, and which way is the right way.

So, is Fregie a great poet? This is truly impressive poetry. Fergie’s complex feeling is transferred to the listener, very strongly.

Through the main metaphor
Through the music of the words
Through the popistic tone

Every thing adds to a feeling, music, and a complex symbolic meaning.
